This summer I took an extended weekend trip that I wanted to share some details about. My girlfriend and I each took a Friday off in July and booked an Airbnb in Clayton, NY. Growing up with a cottage about 15 miles to the west of Clayton, I was familiar with the area and many of the things that it has to offer. My girlfriend, on the other hand, had never been to the Thousand Island before. So, the sights and attractions were brand new to her. The area is famous for its many breweries and wineries, the most popular being Coyote Moon Vineyards in Clayton. This was one of our first stops. We also made sure to visit Wellesley Island on one of the days. If you’ve never been to Wellesley Island, it is one of the largest islands and is full of Victorian style homes and small shops and diners. The island also includes numerous beaches and two state parks. My favorite part of our trip was the boat tour that we went on, including a tour of Boldt Castle (on Heart Island). The tour lasted about an hour and a half as we went through “Millionaire’s Row”. When we arrived at Heart Island, we were able to get off of the tour boat and explore the castle for about an hour. We were in Clayton for about two and a half days and felt like there were several things that we did not have time to do. If you are looking to plan a weekend get-away following this winter that is still within driving distance, I would highly recommend the Thousand Islands area.
